- Native to China, the Philippines and India, lychees are a delicious fruit that has been cultivated for over two thousand years.
- Apparently in the 1st century, fresh lychees were in such demand at the Imperial Court, that a special courier service with fast horses would bring the fresh fruit from a rainforest in Guangdong province. These days we thankfully don’t have to rely on fast horses to get our lychee fix.
- In appearance, the lychee fruit has a rough skin, but underneath is the sweet juicy fruit. It’s what’s on the inside that counts, right?
Because the lychee requires very specific climatic conditions to grow and have a short shelf life, they are considered a luxury fruit.
